Each year around 11 November, Polish-Australian communities across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth lace up their running shoes to commemorate Poland's 1918 independence with the Polonijny Bieg Niepodległości.

11 November is one of the most significant dates in the Polish calendar — Independence Day, marking Poland's restoration as a sovereign state in 1918 after 123 years of partition under three empires. For the Polish diaspora worldwide, including Australia, the date is observed with ceremony, reflection, and increasingly, with running.

The Polonijny Bieg Niepodległości — Polish Independence Run — has become an annual tradition across Australian capital cities. The eighth edition took place in 2025, with events organised in Brisbane on 25 May, Sydney's Plumpton on 26 October, Melbourne, and Perth on 9 November.

The run brings together runners of all ages and abilities — Polish migrants, second and third generation Polish-Australians, friends and family of the community. It is a moving public expression of identity and continuity, blending physical activity with national pride.

For many participants, the run is also a way to introduce children to Polish heritage in a way that feels modern and joyful, rather than ceremonial. The 2026 edition will continue the tradition.
